Current year Out of Character = Current year In Character May 16th, 2003: The Black Mesa Incident. The world is thrown into chaos as the veil between Earth and the borderworld Xen becomes torn. Many cities become fortified safe havens in an attempt to combat the emergent aliens. May 21st, 2003: The Seven Hour War, of which its end was marked by the unanimous, unconditional surrender of Earth by the UN council, negotiated by Dr. Wallace Breen. The Combine earn the initial trust of many by not only ceasing further hostility, but turning their efforts toward defending humanity from the onslaught of invasive aliens stemming from the Borderworld. May 22nd, 2003: The beginning of the First Days. The Combine begin to liquidate many of...
As the Black Mesa Incident came to a close, a lone theoretical physicist vanished into legend as a pure being of myth, who many attributed to resolving the initial crises of the incident. While the world at large would never know Dr. Freeman’s fate once he stepped through the portal at the Lambda Complex, he was in truth responsible for eliminating the very being that had invaded Earth during the crisis: the enigmatic Nihilanth. However, the Nihilanth was, during its battle with Freeman, artificially holding the way between Earth and the borderworld open, and its death further destabilized an already resonant rift between the two planes. The consequence of this moment would not be seen for many years later. In that time, the Combine...
The North American Annex is the label given to the territory specially declared by the Combine to refer to the former United States in central North America, classified so due to the highly anomalous Resonance Homogenization phenomenon within the North American Exclusion Zone. As the phenomenon grows, cities are evacuated and populations are moved further east. The hysterics of the internal logistics of shuffling around populations constantly is only worsened by a mass influx of refugee populations flowing into the cities in the midwest and the eastern seaboard. = Sector Capitol = Sector Capitol (with citadel) = Minor Urban Center = Destroyed MAJOR URBAN CENTERS CITY LOCATION STATUS City 242 Vancouver, Canada Active City...
This resource was originally composed by Enraged, and has been re-utilized for use in our setting. All wildlife resided as normal. Humanity continued to breach a balance with naturally preserved ecosystems, causing a wide variation of mammals to lean towards endangerment. Primates, otters, and shrews were among the largest groups that were affected. Mammals on the brink of extinction were kept alive in wildlife preservations and zoos in hopes of bringing their populations back up. All wildlife residing in or near major cities on the day (and week following) of the Black Mesa Incident and Seven Hour War were effectively wiped out. The only species of animals that went extinct were those that were being heavily preserved in...
Shortly after the Combine established a totalitarian state system over the conquered nations of Earth, a widescale effort was made to establish a system of preparatory institutions for the youth. These schools were originally established under the pretense of creating safe environments for young people while the world was rocked by the turmoil of societal reform. Originally, this would have seemed a relatively benign solution to a pressing problem, and families would eagerly send their children off - not knowing that they would never see them again. Eventually, through a mix of convoluted bureacracy, population shifts, and rhetoric about reducing the students' dependency on their families, all public communication with these...
Combine technology & you: a guide for enterprising hackers, interlopers and do-gooders alike Abstract Interaction and manipulation with Combine technology is an important, yet often sidelined concept within the setting. Resistance efforts have rarely centered around undermining the Combine through their own technology, and instead have focused on partisan efforts that reflect more conventional, albeit highly creative tactics. Even with Combine-affiliated factions like the CCA or CEC, interactions rarely surpassed flavor emotes, with little in the way of substance. In most cases, this isn’t for lack of interest, but a lack of guidance: any interactions meant to accomplish a narrative goal were largely officiated on an ad hoc basis...
Medigel, dubbed such by most citizens for its powerful medicinal properties and gelatinous consistency, has become a staple of human medical practice post-Resonance Cascade. Medigel itself is not naturally found in Earth’s environments. However its key ingredient, antlion grub secretion, is produced naturally in the bodies of juvenile antlions, which have taken to infesting terrestrial environs in plentiful saturation. Antlion grubs at varying stages of growth contain bioluminescent “pellets” and fluids which have a number of benefits for medical treatment. Such pellets in their natural, raw form are depicted below. The Combine brought with them a scientific process to filter, purify, and treat these substances so as to increase...
Plastidamine. Because everyone deserves a chance to heal. Introduced in 2008 as a supplement to Memory Replacement Therapy, Plastidamine is a commercial drug found on most pharmacy shelves on Combine-occupied Earth. Although Memory Replacement Therapy was introduced to the citizenry a year earlier -- in 2007 -- it was largely shunned by the civil populace as its advertised effects of "helping overcome trauma and mental dissonance" were relatively inconsistent and appeared to wear off quickly. The subsequent cognitive dissonance and ensuing psychiatric troubles have, for quite a few years, ruined the therapeutic appeal of Memory Replacement, but the population at large has begun to forget the rocky start to this novel form of Combine...
The most notable impact that the Resonance Cascade had upon the Earth was the introduction of endless, invasive lifeforms that poured out from the recesses of the borderworld Xen. Unleashed amidst the chaos of the Black Mesa Incident, these creatures would weave themselves into every ecosystem on the planet, obliterating food chains and disrupting agriculture in every corner of the globe. It was the rapid introduction to these creatures that reduced humankind into the vulnerable state that allowed the technologically superior Combine's arrival days later to be that much more of a one-sided affair, and therein shaped the world that we know today. Here are but a few of the creatures that have come to frequent planet Earth, twenty years...
Within a day of the fiery conclusion of the Black Mesa incident, the US government hastily passed the Emergency Service Amnesty Act, supported by many of the same politicians that backed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban from the previous decade. Those that had illegal assault weapons were allowed to keep them, no questions asked, if they joined a citizen militia to help control the Xenian infestation. Those with legal, grandfathered assault weapons or legally complaint copies were encouraged and rewarded for joining in on the fun, too. America's gun culture, which for years had spouted performative platitudes about civil defense and defending friends and loved ones as a justification for these weapons, were now faced with an opportunity...
COMBINE ADAPTIVE SIMULATED TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS Or, more colloquially, "Sims". BACKGROUND AND INCEPTION: Combine Sims were originally developed as training regimens for an earlier generation of Overwatch soldiers. The key principle to these sims is that a graphical representation of a virtual space is developed, and the technology works in concert with the human senses to improve visual fidelity, kinetic feedback, taste and smell, facsimiles of pain and even more favorable sensations. To the brain, augmented or otherwise, these sims become indistinguishable from reality. These early sims, many still in use today, are very boilerplate scenarios, such as firearms practice, land navigation, field surgery training, heavy vehicle...
